Final project
Goal
An important part of HAI work is the ability to do some basic research. Here we want you to scope out and execute a bit of research in the borderlands where AI and humans meet. To do this assignment requires:
- identifying an interesting research topic;
- scoping out a bit of research study; and
- the study along with reporting the results of your work.
A few ideas to jump-start your thinking:
- Compare and contrast a few different (but similar) tools with AI support. Examples might include CAD design tools, writing assistance tools, creativity enhancement tools, etc.
- Interview 2 or 3 experts in the field on a topic of particular concern. (Be sure they’re recognized experts). Summarize what they tell you and synthesize it with your own thoughts.
- Build an AI-using system and test it on a few people. Such a study would be considered a “pilot” study and not a full-fledged research study, but it will give you good experience. (Note that using platforms like Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or various open-source libraries makes this feasible.)
- Find a situation where a social robot is in use. Do a small study to see if you can see how it’s being used, and what issues might arise. How well does it work in practice?
- If your team has experience in software development, you might want to build an AI system using available APIs (for example, the MakerSuite tool or VisualBlocks tool). Make sure you specify the research question that your software is intended to answer.
