Pedagogy:
Since AI became capable of producing human-like writing and integrating plausible-sounding research, many instructors have struggled with where to draw the line in the use of AI for academic papers. The following example, drawn from a class specifically focused on AI issues, provides a succinct policy. The emphasis here is on students taking ultimate responsibility for the finished work and disclosing AI use.
Course Description
This course is intended to acquaint students with major themes related to governance of artificial intelligence. The course examines the principal challenges and opportunities AI presents for society and investigates how governments, companies and non-governmental institutions might shape the future of AI. There are no prerequisites for this class, but we encourage students to become acquainted with some basic AI tools.
AI Policy Statement
Students may use generative AI tools in the construction of their papers. However, they must disclose in a separate document how they used those tools, and even a single hallucination in the paper will result in a failing grade.
