IDEAL Syllabus

Main content start

Open to primary instructors (faculty, lecturer, and graduate)

A course syllabus is often a student’s first encounter with a course and teaching team, and research indicates that the impressions created by a syllabus can shape a student’s subsequent learning experience in the course.

An IDEAL syllabus is one that starts building an Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable, and Accessible Learning environment for course students. It also provides an opportunity for instructors from backgrounds less represented in higher education to model for students the respect and authority they expect to be accorded in the course.

Use CTL’s  IDEAL Syllabus Guide to implement and assess changes to your course syllabus.

Once you’re ready, request a consultation with a CTL staff member, being sure to note “IDEAL Syllabus” as the topic of your consultation. Priority will be given to primary instructors responsible for creating a course syllabus for the next academic quarter.

Prefer to self-assess your syllabus? You can use the IDEAL Syllabus Guide at your own pace, and the Resources and References section at the end provides additional tools for syllabus self-assessment.
