First Day Teaching Support

Request First Day Teaching Support Here

Many TAs and graduate student instructors are rightfully concerned about teaching online for the first time. Sign up here for a consultant to be present in your first online class or section to troubleshoot and provide support. After the session, you can debrief with your consultant to learn tips and best practices.

If you teach as part of a course with a large number of sections, please schedule Teaching Support for the first section of the week. You can then share insights learned with the rest of the teaching team.

You can still request a microteaching session, video consultation, or small group feedback session (all available in remote formats) by clicking the link below.

Mid-quarter Small Group Feedback Session (SGFS)
An SGFS at mid-quarter can be one of the most useful ways to gather input from students while you still have time to implement changes. In an SGFS, a trained CTL consultant comes to your class during the last 20 minutes and, in your absence, places your students in small groups. Each group brainstorms what is contributing to their learning in the class, what needs improvement, and what students themselves can do to improve the course. The consultant facilitates a class discussion to identify areas of consensus and disagreement, and the consultant meets with you later to discuss your students’ feedback and to share a written report. We encourage TAs teaching multiple sections to request an SGFS for each section. SGFSs should be conducted during weeks 4-6 of the quarter.

Video Recording and Consultation
A trained consultant will record your class and then meet with you later to review footage and offer suggestions. Requests for video recording must be for actual courses, not practice job talks or other presentations that take place outside the context of a Stanford course.

Please note that videos are streaming only and cannot be downloaded. Video recordings can be requested any time during the quarter.

SGFS + Video Recording and Consultation
With this combined service, you and your consultant can review video footage and student feedback for a 360° view of your teaching.

Midterm Online Feedback Survey
Anonymous online surveys provide the opportunity to gather feedback, make modifications, assess prior student knowledge, and perform active learning exercises. We can help you create and customize surveys and interpret results.

A trained consultant engages a small group of TAs in a two-hour practice teaching session. Each TA is videorecorded presenting 4-5 minutes of teaching. The group then gives feedback a positive, encouraging environment.
