Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning at Stanford
Stanford University has joined the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) network. The mission of CIRTL is to enhance undergraduate education through development of faculty committed to evidence-based teaching practices for diverse learners.
CIRTL values learner-centered education, equity and inclusion, diversity and representation, collaboration, intellectual generosity, inclusive excellence and innovation, and reflective decision-making. We are excited that Stanford will now be able to utilize this network for resources, workshops and other events, campus learning communities, and a teaching certificate for graduate students, postdocs and other interested instructors.
This opportunity is being offered to the community through a collaboration between CTL, the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and Stanford Introductory Studies.
CIRTL core ideas
Learning-through-diversity capitalizes on the rich array of experiences, backgrounds, and skills among undergraduates and graduates-through-faculty to enhance the learning of all. It recognizes that excellence and diversity are necessarily intertwined.
Teaching-as-research is the deliberate, systematic, and reflective use of research methods by instructors to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of both students and teachers.
Learning communities bring together groups of people for shared learning, discovery, and generation of knowledge. To achieve common learning goals, a learning community nurtures functional relationships among its members.
Instructors can now access resources and workshops and courses offered through the network. Visit the CIRTL network events page to view upcoming opportunities and find registration information. As a participant from a CIRTL Network member institution, your registration receives priority for any programs that are offered (as long as spots are available).

CIRTL@ Stanford teaching certificate program
Taking part in CIRTL@ Stanford and CIRTL network offerings will enable graduate students, postdocs, and lecturers/academic teaching staff to work towards teaching certificates that demonstrate their efforts in teaching-related preparation and engagement.
Professional development opportunities like these were shown to be associated with getting tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty positions (Connolly, 2016). The teaching certificates can also be listed on resumes and CVs and will provide the opportunity for development of teaching-related materials that are critical for job applications.
The levels are briefly described below, but you can find detailed information about each level and the requirements on the CIRTL@ Stanford teaching certificate page.
Associate
CIRTL participants will be able to describe and recognize the value of the CIRTL core ideas in effective teaching and learning through their engagement in campus and network offerings.
Practitioner
CIRTL participants will engage in the process of utilizing CIRTL core ideas to improve the learning of students through the design and execution of a Teaching-as-Research project.
Scholar
CIRTL participants will advance knowledge on teaching and learning through scholarship, including public presentation of their Teaching-as-Research project.
