TEACHING

Teaching banner

“We believe it is not only possible but vital that we give teaching as much emphasis and support as we give research. As a Stanford faculty member, academic staff member, or teaching assistant, you are already recognized for your scholarship in your field. We ask that you be a leader in your teaching as well….I hope that you approach your teaching with the same passion that you approach your research. Not only will our students benefit, but I firmly believe that it will result in further intellectual exploration and growth for you as well.”

John L. Hennessy, President

Faculty

CTL’s free and confidential services and resources are available to anyone who teaches at Stanford—faculty, lecturers, and postdoctoral fellows. In order to most effectively support you, CTL’s teaching consultants are organized along disciplinary lines, with Associate Directors for the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Sciences and Engineering.

TAs and Graduate Students

Assistance to Individual TAs and Graduate Students

CTL assists TAs to be successful as teachers and future academic professionals by providing individual TAs, on request, with all of the teaching resources and assistance listed on the TA and Graduate Student resources webpage [link], including consultation, classroom observation, student small group evaluations, and videorecording and analysis, and workshops and courses on teaching topics, public speaking and communication, and professional development.

TA Training Assistance to Departments

We work with faculty and departments to design, implement, assist with, and evaluate programs that prepare new TAs for their teaching roles and support all TAs as they carry out their teaching responsibilities. Past activities have included workshops on discussion-leading, lecturing, testing and grading, and teaching portfolios. We have also assisted with departmental teaching orientations and teaching handbooks, the development of courses on teaching, and small grants.

If you are a department chair or a faculty member who supervises TAs, please contact the associate director affiliated with your discipline to discuss training programs for your TAs.
