CTL offers various resources and services to undergraduate students - peer tutoring and learning skills coaching to help you thrive at Stanford and oral communication opportunities to help you develop your public speaking and communication skills. You can find detailed descriptions of our programs on the Undergraduate Academic Life website, the comprehensive web resource for academic information, advice, and opportunities for Stanford undergrads.
In order to answer your question as quickly as possible, please review this list first. submitted to tutoringhelp@stanford.edu. If your question and answer are not listed below, you may email tutortinghelp@stanford.edu and a CTL staff member will reply to your email as soon as possible.
Q: I'd like to set up an appointment with a tutor. Can you arrange that for me?
A: Students should set up appointments themselves using our online scheduling system at sututor.stanford.edu. From there, you can view available appointment times and drop-in hours. Be sure to try both "Appointment Tutoring" and "Residential Tutoring" (drop-in hours).
Please note that in order to receive tutoring for a course, you must be enrolled in that course.
Q: I have logged in to sututor.stanford.edu, but I don't see any appointments or drop-in hours for the course in which I'm enrolled. How can I receive tutoring in that course?
A: Unfortunately, this typically means that we do not have tutors who can offer that course this year. If it is early in the quarter, tutors may not have posted their availability yet; check the tutoring schedule again later in the quarter. When tutoring is not available, CTL strongly encourages students to attend professor and TA office hours for extra assistance (and this is a good habit, anyway!).
Q: I'd like to meet with a writing tutor or Oral Communication Tutor. How do I do that?
A: Both writing and oral communication tutoring appointments can be scheduled using sututor.stanford.edu but are not administered by CTL's Peer Tutoring Program (tutoringhelp@stanford.edu). More information about writing tutoring can be found on the Hume Writing Center's website: hwc.stanford.edu. If you encounter problems accessing the web site or have additional questions about writing tutoring, please contact writingcenter@stanford.edu. Similarly, oral communication tutoring information is available at speakinghelp.stanford.edu or by emailing speakinghelp@stanford.edu.
Q: I'd like to become a tutor. How do I do that?
A: CTL reviews peer tutor applications each winter and then hires tutors to work the following academic year. For more information about the peer tutor application process, please go to http://www.stanford.edu/dept/undergrad/cgi-bin/drupal_ual/ARS_find_tutor_beatutor.html.
Q: I'm a graduate student, and I'd like to set up a tutoring appointment.
A: Stanford graduate students are not eligible to receive peer tutoring from CTL. They can, however, receive writing tutoring from the Hume Writing Center (http://hwc.stanford.edu) or services from CTL's Oral Communication Program (http://speakinghelp.stanford.edu).
Q: Can I arrange tutoring for a child or other family member?
A: Tutoring is available to Stanford undergraduates only, and appointments must be scheduled online at sututoring.stanford.edu.
Q: Who can help with my study skills? Who can I contact for academic coaching and academic skills (e.g., test-taking anxiety, time management, reading)?
A: Contact CTL’s Associate Director for Academic Support, Adina Glickman, directly at adinag@stanford.edu or (650) 723-8676. For further resources, check out http://ual.stanford.edu/ARS/help_academic/AcademicCoaching.html.
Q: Where can I find a tutor to help me with my writing project (e.g., thesis, papers, etc.?
A: Undergraduates and graduate students can request help at the Hume Writing Center (http://hwc.stanford.edu/) at (650) 724-3487 or email writingcenter@vpue.stanford.edu.
Q: Who can help me with my English since English is not my first language?
