Stanford students flock to courses that address "hot" topics of current interest, like ethnic conflicts. Some bring with them deeply felt partisan commitments. Can they or should they be persuaded to lay those commitments aside in order to learn the "facts" in an "objective" or "detached" way? What is the meaning of objectivity and detachment in a partisan world? What is the place of moral commitment in the venture of teaching and learning?
